Kaine Talks Rail, Economy and Bipartisanship

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Police: Man Shot, Killed in Sequoyah Complex Wednesday Night

A man was found late last night sitting in a vehicle with gunshot wounds; pronounced dead at local hospital.

A 47-year-old man was fatally wounded at the Sequoyah housing complex near Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School late Wednesday night. At 11:30 p.m., police were initially called for a noise complaint at the intersection of San Leandro Place and Mendocina Place, according to Officer Bud Walker, Fairfax County Police spokesman. Once responding officers arrived at the scene, in the Sequoyah condominium complex parking lot, they discovered an adult male sitting in a vehicle with gunshot wounds to the upper body. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation as a homicide. "We have no reason to believe this was a suicide," Walker said. Detectives have identified the victim, but …

Actually they have done (and are doing) a lot of work to improve the place. They have a new security company (they actually found the man on their patrol) and are upgrading decks, shingles, roofs and are repainting. Phase one looks really good now...everyone is just waiting for those upgrades to flow back through the rest of the property. Certainly not a quick process by any means since it all …   more ›

WMPA Music Director Hits a High Note

Conductor and music director Ulysses James has invigorated three orchestras over the last three decades.

Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association Music Director Ulysses S. James has led three orchestras through nearly three decades of performances and rehearsals. James, 76, served in the Navy for two decades following his graduation from Brown University in 1958. He moved to Mount Vernon in 1977 with his wife and three children when he was stationed at Navy Yard. After serving as a surface warfare naval officer, James left the Navy in 1979. He had a second career as an organizational management development coordinator and was drawn back to music. James had been a trombonist while earning his music degree at Brown; years later, he picked up the cello. In 1984, he took over the Mount Vernon Youth Orchestra and the Mount Vernon Orchestra…

Why I Jumped Out Of A Perfectly Good Airplane, 5 Times

Realizing the full effect of what I had just done, I started uttering every word that George Carlin had implored us never to use on TV.

I did a number of foolish things in my youth. Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane five times probably belongs somewhere on the list.  I was 22, had just finished my Army Adjutant General (AG) Corps Officer’s Basic Course at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., and was in transit to Bad Kreuznach, West Germany, for my first duty assignment with the 8th Infantry Division.  But little did I know that my branch manager had other plans for me. Being both a young woman and a personnel (AG) officer heading into an infantry division, laden with crusty combat arms soldiers, my branch manager thought I needed some street cred before reporting to my new unit. His advice: Arrive in Germany with jump wings sewn on your uniform. He was either really …

Visions for Vacancies

Visions for Vacancies: Sacramento Veterinary Center

This former animal clinic space is looking for a new tenant. What do you want to see open here?

This storefront was previously occupied by Sacramento Veterinary Center, an animal hospital. It is located in the Sacramento shopping center in the 8700 block of Richmond Highway just north of the intersection of Mt. Vernon Memorial Highway. The business has been vacant since last year. There is plenty of parking and there are a few restaurants, including Vinito's Pizza, nearby. County officials and local business organizations are not aware of any plans for the site. Calls to the leasing agents were not returned. So, what would you like to see occupy this storefront? Is there a type of business you think our community needs?  Take our poll or tell us in the comments!

The FCPS transportation department reported there were no injuries and additional buses were sent to the school to take those students home.

Local Restaurant Inspection Reports

See the latest reports from the Virginia Department of Health.

In the last two weeks, these area restaurants were cited for "critical violations" by the Virginia Department of Health: What's a 'Critical Violation'? A "critical violation" is one that "poses a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served."  Non-critical violations are generally related to cleaning or maintenance. "Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not corrected immediately and not repeated. In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to VDH's website. The site continues: "Keep in mind that any inspection report is a 'snapshot' of the day and time of the inspection. On any given day, …

Movie Star Tax Credits, A Gay Judge and the Session Ends

A summary of the 2012 legislative session.

Well, it’s over. The 2012 General Assembly ended on May 15, 2012 at 2:00 a.m. after a 13-hour House of Delegates’ session involving 117 of Governor Bob McDonnell’s amendments and the election of 40 judges. It was a fitting end to a very contentious session. The day was not without controversy. This year, we authorized a bonus and raises for state employees for the first time in five years to be funded with unanticipated revenues.  These state employees include state troopers, corrections employees and people who work for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC), Department of Transportation (VDOT), judges, court clerks, game wardens, and colleges. On a zero to 95 vote, the House of Delegates rejected the …
