A man robbed the Walmart store Sunday night at the King's Crossing shopping center. Patch file photo

Where is the Wal-Mart security? I've seen them standing about both inside and outside of the storeRead More entrance. Is the level of security so lax that the presence of security personnel no longer a deterrent to thieves and robbers. Check any weekly crime report for the Mount Vernon District and there are numerous theft incidents at the 6300 block of Richmond Highway. The new crime maps for the different Fairfax Districts show different size balloons indicating the number of crime incidents in each district. There is repeatedly a very large balloon in the vicinity of Kings Crossing. I appreciate the Fairfax County police for their service and professionalism but this area needs a security and crime prevention reboot. This area is growing so fast and becoming more urban in nature that more bicycle and foot patrols might be a deterrent to would be criminals. My neighborhood received a crime watch notice just this past Monday for a 10:30 A.M. street robbery at the Pizza Hut next to the Wal-Mart with 2 suspects fleeing toward the neighborhood behind this shopping area. We need some proactive solutions not just crime incident reports.

Thanks for your comments; there is a Citizen Advisory Committee that meets the second Tuesday ofRead More every month; CAC contact is Marianne Baltimore, runne66@aol.com. Also this is the number and email for the Crime Prevention Office: 703-360-8928; gkotte@fairfaxcounty.gov
Wildermann April 9, 2014 at 12:13 pm
Yes the community has a new volunteer to attend the CAC. Unfortunately, the scheduled meeting forRead More this week was canceled. We are re-initiating the neighborhood watch program with the crime prevention office. All of the commerce and development happening in this area is good for the county tax base but it brings additional problems in traffic and now an increase in crime. We certainly hope that county leaders take these changes and negative outcomes into account and prioritize funding to effectively deal with such growing problems.

Vincent Careatti, I see your posts and they are either about I-66 or Route 7. it seems you get offRead More the I-66 to get onto local roads when I-66 backs up. Does that make you want to use cut through and speed? Sounds like it to me. I want the police to keep an eye on you. Because of your cut through driving, you make it very unsafe for my neighbors children, the elderly and myself. Stay on your I-66 commuter traffic route and stay the heck out of places you don't belong. You are making things worst being there. You are the traffic many people don't want driving in their neighborhoods. You don't live there, don't visit or do business there, so you just don't belong there.
Lisa April 6, 2014 at 11:46 am
Part of the problem is the length of the traffic cycles. Miss the light and one can end up waiting 5Read More minutes to get going again, and in some cases have to go through multiple cycles to get through the intersection. In our society of impatience, people start doing other things like texting and reading email, then continue to finish up what they are doing once the traffic moves again. I see that every morning that I drive to work.
Alvin Clinton Hicks, Jr. April 6, 2014 at 09:27 pm
All this is simply proof that the regions police departments are not doing their jobs. All policeRead More officers are responsible to traffic duty when on duty. Most have an attitude to justify not doing this responsibly. Yet the death toll and injury toll is rising in every region across the nation. The last year's death toll was over 43,000. With serious injury's in the hundreds of thousands! And Fairfax is no exception. Most police officers think that they are supposed to get paid overtime on what is called 'auxilary' traffic duty assignments on $overtime$. And the dispatch offices are in on it as well. They get thousands of calls daily with traffic complaints directly involving improper Motor Vehicle Operator driving in any given area thru out Fairfax and most go ignored. Yet someone will call in a redundant call by comparison and the patrolling officers on duty will respond to it instead of the thousands involving even reckless driving reports! Bottom line? It is such gross negligence it is simply criminal in and upon itself! Emails. Written letters. Phone call reports about same being received about Motor Vehicle Operator small and big infractions and what is being done about it? A patrol officer will be sent out to investigate a kitty cat being stuck in a tree instead by dispatch, backed up by the on duty officer of the shift? And what is the departments sworn duty and oat to office and position? "To Serve and Protect". And what major subject issue is killing and injuring people more than any other? The Motor Vehicle Operator.

If a dog bites a person, it's euthanized. If a human kills another person via their job duties,Read More they're eventually put right into an office environment. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.
