Why bother? The books and supplies will be packed away. It is just a waste of people's time.
Rolling Thunder 2013 April 12, 2014 at 12:14 pm
@D. Brown. I thoroughly agree. Waste of time and money.
afsheri April 12, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Agree - what is the point? More money spent on opening for a few hours for zero productivity. AddRead More some Saturdays to the schedule between now and then.
School Delay Decision from Fairfax County Schools. Patch File.
The Convict March 19, 2014 at 04:02 am
Yes, I'm sure our lagging performance against other countries can rightly be attributed toRead More weather-related, school opening delays. I don't know about your kids, but mine, instead of walking headlong into traffic in order to get to the bus stop because of a lack of properly cleared sidewalks, went to the YMCA instead. So, while your kid was out there toughening up by standing in the cold, the Delinquents were toughening up in the gym so that they can literally kick the world's ass.
Mike March 20, 2014 at 04:23 pm
Our lagging performance has everything to do with the idiots running Henrdon Elementary. Lots of forRead More sale signs going up this spring as a result! Nice job HE! I see Brenda Wichman was nice enough to perpetuate the whine about the poor kiddies having to stand and walk on snow at the bus stop or on their way to school! OH THE HORROR! Man some parents are freakin...well, you know.

I see you like kids.....
Closing/Delay Information for Fairfax County Schools. Patch file photo.
RADIO GUY March 16, 2014 at 07:05 pm
Of course schools should be closed if road conditions endanger school children.
Kathie Diapoulis March 16, 2014 at 07:22 pm
I just got an email from Fairfax County School stating that they were closed tomorrow.
There's a way around the calendar crunch for some snow days: a state waiver. Patch file photo.

Since they are not going to change the date of regularly scheduled testing I don't think that makingRead More up the days do anything good for the students. Unless these days can be made up in advance of the test (sol, ect) so my vote it to not extend school!
MomtoB February 18, 2014 at 03:09 pm
Most schools around the world have classes year round. We have 180 days and then aren't even goingRead More to make up the ten missed days. It's ridiculous. These kids need to be in school. Yes make up the days, go to a longer school year. Make Monday's full day, take away teacher work days and whatever else it takes. There were talks about starting before Labor Day every year - why didn't that take place? Our kids are missing out on education and they need to be in school more to make up for it.
Meg February 19, 2014 at 03:43 pm
Maybe schools should have thought of this before classes were cancelled. There's no reason kidsRead More can't go to school because of the threat of snow. And "storms" where we get 2 inches and classes cancelled are JOKE. And I'm sorry when temps are in the low 20's with windchills in the teens or single digits - that's what layers are for... wear winter clothing and dress for the weather. I have absolutely no sympathy for the kids needing to be in school longer.

Teachers Dressing Casual For a Raise in Fairfax County
Debbie February 11, 2014 at 11:28 am
They should dress casual anyway. There's absolutely NO reason for teachers to dress in suits andRead More 'business casual' when kids show up in sweatshirts and jeans. Who are the business clients they're trying to impress? The kids don't care.
Fairfax County Public Schools students got another day off on Thursday, thanks to snow, ice and below-freezing temperatures that hit the area this week. Patch file photo.
Lisa Harris January 24, 2014 at 08:16 am
I couldn't imagine a bus coming down our steep hill Thursday. It was still covered with ice (theRead More whole road). They made a good call as far as our neighborhood was concerned. (although we are more rural than the rest of the county). Also, I think as far as the extreme cold: I see so many children who don't have proper clothes, just hoodies. I am not sure if it is economics? If the cold stayed for awhile, maybe these families would catch up and purchase what is needed, but I guess if it is a surprise cold, they just don't have the right coverage. Children's fault?
Tara January 24, 2014 at 05:23 pm
Seriously, it was very responsible to call off school for Thursday! The main roads were good butRead More there are so many back roads and the cold etc made it dangerous for these kids! Parents who actually have the nerve to complain about the day off are ridiculous and goes to show how important their kids well being really is...sorry for inconveniencing you!!
Enoch January 28, 2014 at 12:25 pm
C'mon people. YOU ARE THE REASON why the school closed. Not the kids, the parents. You think theRead More County wants a law suit on their hands. NO. Better play it safe than sorry and not get sued. This is a money decision ... and to some degree a PR decision.
Should the buses have rolled this week? Patch file photo.
Deb January 24, 2014 at 10:31 am
It is ridiculous to keep kids home for cold weather. As long as the roads and parking lots areRead More clear kids should be in school. As for the walkers and kids who drive themselves, when are the parents going to take responsibility? Drive your kids to school. And it's the parents who should be sure their kids are dressed appropriately for the weather. As for the make up days, taking away a teacher work day is one thing but taking away a federal holiday shouldn't happen. Nor should extending the school year which could disrupt many summer plans.
Rudy January 24, 2014 at 10:35 am
I agree with Ms. Kelly! Additionally, not everyone in the county lives in Sterling Park or AshburnRead More Village! In more rural areas, the roads are still not the best to walk and or drive on! Thought.... If you lived in these rural areas, and you child was on the bus, the bus slid off the road and was stuck on the bus for several hours....would you complain and raise a stink? This is another reason that the school board made their decision. It is better for them to receive complaints of a handful more school days, than to have dozens of parents complaining about accidents, injuries and their childs well being. I give kudos to the board for announcing they were closing for the remainder of the week, days in advance. As this allowed us to plan, the best we could. Opposed to reacting to this information in the morning while watching the news!
Deborah Kelly January 24, 2014 at 10:55 am
Good thing we have school officials making their best professional decisions instead of a bunch ofRead More nutty parents who can't agree on anything! We should support the school system's decisions even when we don't agree. Amen.
