'Active' Hurricane Season, 'Well Above' Average, NOAA Predicts

Weather center predicts three to six "major hurricanes" for the season that begins June 1.

Official word for the 2013 hurricane season: The Atlantic area could see three to six "major hurricanes" for the season, which begins Saturday, June 1, according to the experts at the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Although Northern Virginia normally doesn't take direct hits from hurricanes, the mega-storms can still pack a punch in the area, downing trees and power lines and knocking out power for days in recent years. Remember Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee?  Here's what NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said Thursday: For the six-month hurricane season, which starts June 1, NOAA’s Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook says there is a 70 percent likelihood of: Of those 13 to 20 storms, the outlook says seven …

Weird News: Cicadas (Or Not), Naked Strolls, Crows in Closets and Kitty Litter in The Pool

Plus, we tell you where NOT to find your next lawnmower.

Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Cicadas Everywhere (Or Not): A line has been drawn, and it isn't residents rejecting the D.C. metro label — it's cicadas that have decided they'd rather avoid the congestion inside the Beltway. We've been anxiously anticipating a crazy spring of buzzing cicadas crawling everywhere. Now, some of us are finding the big bugs crawling out of holes and up trees in Fredericksburg, Woodbridge and lower Fairfax County, but others haven't seen any of this year's brood.  Enjoying the Breeze: Manassas City Police have a description of a suspect in …

Movie Reviews by Cinema Siren

'Epic': Review, Showtimes, Trailer

'Hiring big names was not in the best interest of the film.'

To be fair, director Chris Wedge (of Ice Age and Rio) has created a nature-based fantasy engaging enough that it will find an audience, but when one changes the name of a movie from Leaf Men to Epic, one better come with one's A+ game, no? Epic qualifies for a solid C, which is still a passing grade, but if you brought that home to mom, she would be displeased. This over-plotted muddle with under-drawn characters is saved by a handful of characters' well-defined personalities and the beautifully rendered environments in which they interact.  Click here for movie showtimes for Epic near Mount Vernon. It doesn't help that director Wedge was comparing his newest with the grandiosity of Star Wars and Avatar. While both those incredibly …

Fairfax County Teachers Will Get Pay Raises

In budget approval, school board members divided on how best to keep teacher pay competitive moving forward.

After months of debate on how to fairly compensate Fairfax teachers and keep pace with salaries in other jurisdictions , the Fairfax County School board voted for a $2.5 billion budget Thursday that will give employees a 2 percent mid-year market-scale adjustment  — making good on a commitment from school board members to provide some sort of compensation relief during this fiscal year. Much of the Fiscal Year 2014 spending plan, which passed on an 8-4 vote, is dedicated to changing demographics and unprecedented student growth — 3,089 students are expected to join the system next year, pushing total enrollment to 184,625. It's not strictly true to say that the Board of Supervisors "could not provide a pay increase" to their employees. The truth is they could have, and CHOSE not to. Nobody prevented them from offering a raise. They adopted a tax rate lower than advertised and CHOSE to devalue their employees. It is simply dishonest to suggest otherwise.   more ›

Restaurant Inspections: Wendy's and Roy Rogers

The most recently available restaurant inspection reports along the Route 1 corridor.

The state health department recently inspected a few restaurants along the Route 1 corridor. For prior restaurant inspection reports, click here. In Virginia, restaurant inspection reports aren't quite as simple as getting a letter grade or an easy-to-see number rating to post in the front window. That said, we all want to know how our favorite restaurants stack up on cleanliness and sanitation. Inspectors grade restaurants based on critical and non-critical violations. A "critical violation" is one that "poses a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served." Non-critical violations are generally related to cleaning or maintenance. "Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not …

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …
