A man was found late last night sitting in a vehicle with gunshot wounds; pronounced dead at local hospital.
A 47-year-old man was fatally wounded at the Sequoyah housing complex near Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School late Wednesday night. At 11:30 p.m., police were initially called for a noise complaint at the intersection of San Leandro Place and Mendocina Place, according to Officer Bud Walker, Fairfax County Police spokesman. Once responding officers arrived at the scene, in the Sequoyah condominium complex parking lot, they discovered an adult male sitting in a vehicle with gunshot wounds to the upper body. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation as a homicide. "We have no reason to believe this was a suicide," Walker said. Two commercial burglaries occurred in the Mount Vernon District in the week ending May 9. The first was reported at 7:02 a.m. May 3 from 7940 Richmond Highway in the Hybla Valley area. According to police, an employee of Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. discovered the office trailer burglarized with entry made through a window in the door. Computer equipment and a camera were taken. A second burglary was reported at 5:30 a.m. May 6 at 6138 North Kings Highway (which is just north of the intersection with Richmond Highway). An employee of Best Smokes arrived to work and discovered the glass of the front door smashed out. It appears the burglary occurred during the overnight hours. UPDATE: The 12 year-old girl who was missing from the Mount Vernon area last Friday is with a family member, according to a news release issued this afternoon by the Fairfax County Police Department. "Police have determined that Ashlie O’Brien is in the custody of a family member," the release notes. "The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been placed at this time." An intoxicated man threw beer on a bus driver April 25, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. The incident occurred at about 11:20 p.m. on a Fairfax Connector bus as the intoxicated passenger was exiting the bus. The bus was stopped at the intersection of Lockheed Boulevard and Route 1 at the time. Police could not find the intoxicated man. In separate and unrelated incidents.

Officers will help parents check the security and stability of their infant, toddler and child car safety seats.
The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department will provide free child safety seat inspections in Fairfax this Saturday. Officers will help parents make certain that child safety seats fit properly into vehicle seats and that children fit properly into their safety seats. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their children. According to a release from the sheriff’s department, Virginia law dictates that all children up to 8 years of age must ride in a child restraint device. This includes booster seats. Furthermore, rear-facing infant safety seats must be put in a vehicle’s back seat. Infestation of feral cats reported after 2011 animal hoarding case.
Fairfax County Animal Control will set traps for feral cats in Mount Vernon today. Animal Control officers are setting traps in response to reports from residents that a large number of feral cats are living in and around the 8300 block of Central Avenue, according to Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson Lucy Caldwell. In June 2011, Animal Control officers discovered 23 carcasses of cats and kittens and some cats that were still alive at a residence in the 8300 block of Central Avenue, said Caldwell. The Fairfax County Police Department’s Marine Patrol Unit will live to see another day. Funding for the two officers who patrol Fairfax County’s marinas and nearly 100 miles of shoreline was originally cut from the county’s fiscal year 2013 budget, but the $250,000 needed for the unit was reinstated during a Tuesday mark-up session. The officers’ primary patrol areas include the Occoquan/Belmont Bay, Pohick Bay, Little Hunting Creek, Dogue Creek and Belle Haven. They also patrol Lake Braddock and Lake Barcroft. The unit conducts checkpoints for alcohol-impaired boaters during busy seasons with other local law enforcement, and assists in search and rescue missions. Fairfax County Crime Solvers has a new app, TipSubmit.
Yes, there’s an app for that, too. Fairfax County residents who need to report a crime quickly now have access to a free app for smartphones, called TipSubmit, the first app of its kind. TipSubmit works both on the iPhone and Andriod phones. It allows the public to anonymously submit tips to police through the Fairfax County Crime Solvers program. The technology is similar to current programs that allow users to text and email tips. However, the mobile app offers an extra advantage in that it has the ability to use GPS to auto-locate the nearest Crime Solvers program or law enforcement agency. Actually they have done (and are doing) a lot of work to improve the place. They have a new security company (they actually found the man on their patrol) and are upgrading decks, shingles, roofs and are repainting.
