Police: Alexandria Man Charged with Malicious Wounding

The following information was supplied by the Fairfax County Police Department in the most recent daily reports released May 20. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

The following items are from the recent daily activity report from the Mount Vernon Police District of the Fairfax County Police Department. Assault (blue on map), 1:55 p.m., May 17, Richmond Highway/Sherwood Hall Lane, A 25-year-old man was allegedly attacked. Joshua Sims, 25, of Alexandria was charged with malicious wounding and drunk in public. The victim was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Board of Supervisors Approves Funding for Station Logistic Technicians

The eight FCPD positions have not been cut to four in county budget cuts.

The station logistic technician (SLT) position has not been cut in FCPD county budget cuts. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently approved fully funding all eight positions instead of eliminating four of the positions, said Captain Randy Joyce — commander of the Mount Vernon District Police Station — at the recent Citizen Advisory Committee meeting. One SLT is assigned to each of the eight district police stations. Because of budget cuts, the county was considering cutting it down to four SLTs for Fairfax County. SLTs are responsible for equipment and supplies inventory, maintaining police cruisers (average of 16 cars per week taken to and from the county garage for maintenance and repairs) and other duties around the district …

Wednesday House Fire Damages Estimated at $60K

The fire started in a bedroom of the home.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue estimates the damages of a recent house fire in Mount Vernon at about $60,000, according to a recent news release. Firefighters responded to a call of a house fire at 8019 Seaton Drive in the Sherwood Crossing residential area Wednesday night. The fire department received the call at about 7:48 p.m. and arrived four minutes later. When firefighters arrived, they observed heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the ranch-style, single family home. Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack to keep the fire from spreading to the attic of the home and were able to get the fire under control. Crime Report: Cigarettes Stolen

The latest incident reports from the Mount Vernon District Station.

Robbery/Larceny Cigarettes were reported stolen from a business at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday on the 6800 block of Richmond Highway. According to the Fairfax County Police Department, two men entered the business. One of the men reached over a counter and took cigarettes, the second pushed a clerk and stole cigarettes. Bedroom Fire Displaces 4 People in Alexandria

Fire department responded to a call for a house fire Wednesday night.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to call for a house fire Wednesday night. Battalion Chief Brian Brendel said they received the call for the fire at 8000 Seaton Street in the Sherwood Crossing residential area around 7:48 p.m. Multiple units arrived at the seen of the fire four minutes after receiving the call. When firefighters arrived, they were able to get the fire out within a few minutes. Brendel said the fire started in the bedroom. Three of the four occupants of the single family home had already vacated the home. The fourth roommate was not home at the time of the incident. All four adults have been displaced by the fire. Fire investigators are currently trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Mount Vernon District Police Offer Tips on Home Security, Crime Prevention

MPO Greg Kottemann provided information about security habits and preventing crime during Tuesday's Citizen Advisory Committee meeting.

During Tuesday evening's Citizen Advisory Committee meeting at the Mount Vernon District Police Station, MPO Greg Kottemann gave the residents information about home security. Kottemann said burglaries are crimes that all districts and residents are trying to prevent in the county and all police districts deal with them regularly. "It is one of the hardest crimes to solve because normally no one is home at the time," he said. During his presentation, Kottemann also informed the residents of the four Ds of crime prevention: deter, detect, delay and deny. The crime prevention officer said it's important to take steps to deter criminals from targeting your communities. For example, Kottemann said it's helpful to organize a neighborhood watch …

Washington Mill Elementary Briefly in Lockdown Last Friday

For anyone in the neighborhood who was wondering what happened last week.

Last Friday, Washington Mill Elementary, 9100 Cherry Tree Dr., was briefly in lockdown because of police activity outside the building, according to a letter (see full letter, PDF) that went home to parents from the principal. A 25-year-old wanted man tried to run away from authorities when confronted by officers, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.   The incident was reported at 10 a.m. Friday on the 4400 block of Blyth Place in Mount Vernon. Police said that they had tried to apprehend Donnie White, of Alexandria, but White ran away from police.   White was caught and was served with outstanding warrants. Crime Report: Man, 25, Arrested in Mount Vernon After Chase

The latest incident reports from the Fairfax County Police Department.

Pursuit/Arrest A 25-year-old wanted man tried to run away from authorities when confronted by officers, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.   The incident was reported at 10 a.m. on May 10 on the 4400 block of Blyth Place in Mount Vernon. Police said that they had tried to apprehend Donnie White, of Alexandria, but White ran away from police.   White was caught and was served with outstanding warrants. He was also charged with driving on a suspended license, speeding to elude police, and driving while under the influence.   Larcenies:

Police: Man Charged with Larceny and Assault

Larceny/Assault (red on map), 5:10 p.m., May 4, 2900 block of Arlington Drive,  The 31-year-old victim reported she saw a man reach into her vehicle and take her purse.
