MVHS principal hosts community meeting to discuss need for interior surveillance cameras.
Parents and students Monday night had the opportunity to speak with Mount Vernon High School Principal Nardos King about the possibility of installing interior surveillance cameras. Mount Vernon High School was one of the first schools to get exterior surveillance cameras through a government safety grant. Prior to the installation of the exterior cameras, incidents of vandalism occurred about twice a month. After the cameras were installed, the frequency of these incidents decreased; nine out of 10 times, the cameras helped administrators catch and identify perpetrators, said King. She hopes the interior surveillance cameras will not only help deter negative behavior, but will add a layer of extra security. “I take my job very seriously…

Administration is considering installing interior cameras.
Mount Vernon High School administrators are considering installing interior surveillance cameras and are seeking input from students, faculty, and community members over the next few weeks. “To be honest, my biggest reason to have cameras is to have an extra measure of safety and security in the building,” explained MVHS Principal Nardos King. The Fairfax County School Board approved a video surveillance policy in December 2011. According to Fairfax County Public Schools' policy, each individual school can decide whether should be installed. Cameras are allowed only in “hot spots” such as cafeterias and lobbies. King stresses that “very minor issues” have taken place inside the school, but they have had issues. Cameras would be installed …

Event provides free prom dresses and accessories to area students.
Girls from across Northern Virginia will choose the perfect prom dress at “Princess for a Night” May 19 and May 21 at Mount Vernon High School. The program is in its 10th year of operation, said Mount Vernon High School social worker Katie Basinski, who coordinates the program and oversees donation efforts for four different schools, including West Potomac High School. The program serves between 325 and 350 girls each year. Basinski said she enjoys coordinating the program, which she called a “universal recycling effort.” “Every woman has things in her closet she doesn’t need anymore,” explained Basinski. “It’s an opportunity for people to go through their closets and give away things they don’t need. On the other hand, I think it’s crazy …
With a win over Edison Friday, Mount Vernon will grab No. 1 seed in National District tournament.
The mood on the bus ride back to Mount Vernon (9-1-2) last Monday was somber for members of the boys varsity soccer team. Chantilly had just handed Mount Vernon its first loss of the season and the team’s players struggled to accept the sting of the loss. Trailing 3-1 with eight minutes remaining in the contest, Chantilly, who had won just one game previously, clawed its way back to edge Mount Vernon 4-3 in double overtime. “The whole ride home, and in the locker room, there was nothing but silence. A lot of guys sat there with their heads down reflecting on what they have to do,” said nine-year head coach Robert Garza. “I was good that it happened to us, we needed it to see how we would respond.” Garza gave his team a much needed day off …

The president spoke Friday before more than 1,000 students, parents, teachers and area officials.
President Barack Obama seemed to strike all the right notes Friday at Washington-Lee High School when he delivered a speech designed to put pressure on Congress to keep student loan interest rates down. The president spoke before an enthusiastic crowd of more than 1,000 junior and senior high school students, parents, faculty and local elected officials. Nearly 94 percent of Washington-Lee students go on to some sort of higher education upon graduation. Obama spoke briefly about the economy in general before specifically talking about college affordability. On July 1, a student loan interest rate cut will expire — effectively doubling rates overnight — unless Congress acts, Obama said. He was answered with resounding "boos." "That's like a…

Parental notification still absent from proposed changes, but could be introduced through amendments
Nearly a year after overhauling the student disciplinary system, the Fairfax County School Board is preparing to make several more adjustments to its Students Rights and Responsibilities handbook, among them, adding synthetic marijuana to the list of substances which result in a five-day suspension and mandating principals immediately notify police after alcohol, assault, firearm, bomb threat and certain drug violations. Among other significant modifications proposed, according to board documents, are the inclusion of peer mediation and restorative justice as methods of resolving disputes and addressing student behavior; expanding the section on bullying to include electronic communication; and allowing cell phone and use of other …

by Nancy Wilochka It’s an annual ritual – sometime after the azaleas bloom, but before the summertime heat sets in, homeowners spruce up their yards with mulch. Since 2004, thousands of residents have relied on the Mount Vernon High School (MVHS) Annual Spring Mulch Sale to help beautify their landscaping, and help out a good cause to boot. “The mulch sale is a fundraiser coordinated by the MVHS Combined Parent Council, and the monies raised from the sale helps fund the senior class all-night grad party. The party is an alcohol and drug-free event to celebrate their accomplishments as our seniors prepare to move on to the next chapter of their lives,” said Martha Coleman, MVHS Combined Parent Council President. This year’s mulch sale, held…

Junior basketball phenomenon Kelly Loftus had a remarkable junior season.
At seven years old, Mount Vernon High School junior Kelly Loftus played her first game of basketball on the court her father built behind the family home. It was on that court that Loftus, her sister Devin and her father Tom poured large amounts of sweat and logged countless hours perfecting the basketball skills that would earn her state and regional accolades years later. Basketball has always been a part of the family. “My dad first taught me basketball; he’s always loved it,” said the Mount Vernon sharp shooter. “We had a basketball court in the backyard, and we’d go out there and he’d teach me how to shoot. I just ended up loving it. It’s just a family thing. My whole family loves it.” Loftus wrapped up her junior campaign in February…
