Fairfax Board Approves 2012 Budget Carryover

The package preserves critical human services and establishes a reserve for future shortfalls.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday a 2012 budget carryover package that closes funding shortfalls in human services and sets money aside in case of federal budget cuts. The package, which the board approved in a 9-0 vote, addresses a $9.5 million projected shortfall in the 2013 budget for the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB), an organization that organizes and provides services for residents with mental health issues, substance abuse disorders and developmental disabilities. Fairfax Supervisors to Approve 2012 Budget Carryover Tuesday

The Board of Supervisors will also host a 9/11 ceremony before its Tuesday meeting.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the county’s 2012 budget carryover during its meeting Tuesday after a public hearing on a $40 million surplus. About $27 million of the total is planned for necessary administrative adjustments. “The critical requirements funded at Carryover are largely one-time and include capital needs, such as funding to address Americans with Disabilities Act improvements identified during the Department of Justice audit,” County Executive Ed Long wrote in a July memo to the board. In his memo, Long wrote that the remaining $12 million of the remaining $13 million should be used to establish vital reserves.
