Woodlawn Stables Owner: Officials Ignoring Mount Vernon Community

Patch asked stable owner Cindy Mitchell to weigh in on the public process and public outcry over the stables.

After the news that Arcadia and the National Trust for Historic Preservation have considered expansive plans for the land and property at Woodlawn Plantation, some of which is currently leased to Woodlawn Stables, Patch asked stables owner Cindy Mitchell to weigh in with her thoughts on the future plans for the historic 126 acres and mansion, which dates back to 1805. The stable business lease on the land from the National Trust for Historic Preservation expires in 2016. After requesting an extension of the lease, the National Trust turned her down. It is sad to watch a community rally around a great business like Woodlawn Stables and that it had no impact on having them stay or changing how they would implement widening the road. The community won't support Arcadia if they won't listen to their wants and needs. Woodlawn Stables Owner: 'Honored to Have Maintained Cultural Heritage'

Patch asked stable owner Cindy Mitchell to weigh in on National Trust for Historic Preservation's future plans for property her stable business has leased from them for 34 years.

After it was made known that Arcadia and the National Trust for Historic Preservation have kicked around expansive plans for the land and property at Woodlawn Plantation, some of which is currently leased to Woodlawn Stables, Patch asked stables owner Cindy Mitchell to weigh in with her thoughts on the future plans for the historic 126 acres and mansion, which dates back to 1805. Where are the environmenalists when we need them. They should be protesting against this. The area not only has a stable, but provides a natural habitat for a lot of animals. I see ducks on the grounds all the time, especially on the part of the land near dogue creek.   more ›

USDA Official to Visit Arcadia Mobile Market Today

A local farmers' market that helps the needy is getting some federal attention. Ed Avalos, USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, will visit the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture’s Mobile Market stop at the South County Center Thursday afternoon. Avalos will visit the popular mobile farmers' market to learn about strategies for developing farmer’s markets in underserved communities and exploring the impact of the Bonus Dollars program on nutrition benefit redemption at farmer’s markets. The Mobile Market offers produce at below-market rates for those in need. PHOTOS: Spring Farm Dinner Benefits Arcadia

To celebrate Mother's Day, the Neighborhood Restaurant Group hosted a farm dinner to benefit the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture.

In the middle of a vegetable garden on the grounds of Woodlawn Plantation, Vermilion's Executive Chef Tony Chittum prepared a fresh spring dinner for guests as a benefit for Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture. Arcadia is a non-profit organization founded by Neighborhood Restaurant Group owner Michael Babin in 2010. The organization's goal is to create a sustainable food system throughout the D.C. area through education and by creating logistical connections amongst local farmers and the urban and suburban communities. The Mother's Day four-course dinner was made on the grounds of the historic Woodlawn Plantation, where Arcadia houses an educational farm.
