MVHS Students Look Ahead to New School Year

Four Mount Vernon High School student leaders are ready to enjoy a new school year.

For Mount Vernon High School students, the end of the first week of school is just the beginning of a promising school year. Patch spoke with four student leaders about their expectations for the upcoming school year and got their advice for incoming freshmen. Freshman class president Anastasia has a positive attitude about starting high school and is looking forward to activities like Homecoming week and football games. She enjoys her classes so far and appreciates the freedom of high school. She says the freshman class has shown interest in participating in school-wide activities. Connecting to the Classroom with Tech

From email to e-newsletters, Blackboard to e-books at the library, tech tools are very much a part of the back-to-school equation

Back to school 2012 is a bit different than in earlier years. While some things will always be handled via paper and pen, technology tools are helping to make sure that parents are informed on the issues big and small. Here are a few ways that FCPS and your child's teacher will use technology to keep in touch and provide resources to help your child learn. KIT and KIT-Plus KIT (Keep in Touch) and KIT-Plus are the e-newsletter services that provide up-to-the-minute information for the public on school delays or closings, emergencies, information about FCPS programs and news stories. Volunteers Needed for MVHS PTSA Back-to-School Breakfast

The PTSA is looking for volunteers for the annual breakfast.

Volunteers are needed for the Mount Vernon High School PTSA's Annual Back to School Breakfast for teachers and staff on Monday morning. Volunteers must arrive by 7 a.m. on Monday and will be finished by 8:30 a.m. The PTSA needs the following items: fruit, pastry, bagels, bottled water, juice or donuts. Islamic Circle of North America-Virginia Hosts Backpack Giveaway

ICNA-VA will prepare kids for school with free backpacks and supplies.

This Saturday, the Islamic Circle of North America-VA branch will give away 300 free backpacks with supplies to local children in need. This is the second time ICNA-VA has distributed backpacks with supplies to kids in need, ICNA-VA President Rameez Abid said. ICNA Relief pays for the backpacks and supplies from their own funds. The Back to School Giveaway program is an effort made by ICNA Relief USA, the domestic-relief program of ICNA. In 2011, ICNA Relief USA distributed 15,000 school bags filled with supplies in 49 cities in 16 states across the country. This year, ICNA Relief USA is planning to expand the campaign to more localities in 21 states and has already purchased 25,000 school bags. Distribution centers are being set up with …

Mount Vernon High School football players are practicing twice daily in order to gear up for football season. The Majors will kick off their season with its first game against the West Potomac Wolverines on August 30 at Mount Venron High School. FCPS Requires Vaccinations for School Enrollment

School-required immunizations at county health clinics are free of charge. Some clinics will offer extended hours beginning Aug. 20.

Buying school supplies, shopping for new clothes for growing children and getting kids back on a regular schedule is all part of getting ready to go back to school. Another part of the equation: Making sure your children are vaccinated. While some might think vaccinations are just for infants, you'd better read up. In Fairfax County, when schools open their doors for the 2012-2013 school year (in less than a month, on Sept. 4), one of the requirements is that students be caught up on their vaccinations.
