The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce hosted a Meet the Candidates Forum Thursday.
Sequestration and business development were among the issues discussed Thursday at the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Meet the Candidates" forum. Candidate Patrick Murray, a Republican running in the 8th District race, incumbent Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District), and Republican Chris Perkins, running in the 11th congressional District, attended the forum at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th District) did not attend the forum. The gathering gave Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber members the opportunity to hear from the candidates before the election on Nov. 6. Slow turnout expected today, according to election chiefs.
The polls were quiet in Mount Vernon early Tuesday morning. As of 7:30 a.m., election officials at Washington Mill Elementary School saw 33 voters out of 4400 registered voters in the Westgate precinct. "It's a little slow, but that's to be expected," election chief Rosemary Jellish told Patch. Meanwhile, at Woodley Hills Elementary School, 27 out of 3,037 registered voters turned out to vote as of 7:45 a.m. Former senator and Gov. George Allen and wife Susan greeted voters Tuesday morning at Washington Mill Elementary School, a precinct near their home in Mount Vernon. Republican primary election set for U.S. Senate candidates and 11th Congressional District; Democratic primary election scheduled for 8th Congressional District Democratic candidates.
In less than a month, Virginia voters will head to the polls for the Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday, June 12. Across Northern Virginia, voters will decide among candidates for the U.S. Senate as well as for the 8th and 11th Congressional districts. If your polling place is holding both a Republican primary and a Democratic primary, you can only vote in one primary. If you aren't registered to vote, you have until Monday, May 21 at 5 p.m. to register. Little known fact: If you are 17 years old now but you are turning 18 by the Nov. 6 general election, you can vote in the June 12 primary. Lorton resident Chris Perkins, 55, has raised $178,000 for U.S. House campaign
Republican Chris Perkins, 55, a retired U.S. Army officer who lives with his family in Lorton and is now a self-employed defense consultant, recently kicked off a campaign to represent Virginia's 11th Congressional District, the seat currently held by Democratic Congressman Gerald Connolly. Perkins will compete in the Republican primary election June 12 against Ken Vaughn, the only other candidate currently in the GOP primary race for the 11th Congressional District. Perkins has raised $178,000, with Vaughn raising $120,000, according to the Federal Election Commission. There is no record of Yeh yet raising funds.
