Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Drive Collects 11,000 Pounds for Food Banks

Senate candidate and former Gov. George Allen stopped by a Fort Belvoir/Mount Vernon food drive over the weekend, to contribute to an effort that netted more than 11,000 pounds of goods for area food banks. "At our food drive in Fort Belvoir - Mount Vernon we had a special guest — former Gov. George Allen stopped by to make a donation! We were grateful he would take the time to participate in our food drive in his community," said organizer Christina Thomlinson, in an e-mail Sunday. Allen made the donation at the Mount Vernon Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located on the George Washington Parkway. The Fort Belvoir congregation collected 1,700 pounds of food Saturday there to benefit the Lorton Community Action …

This is slightly off topic but something I've been curious about. I lived in the area for at least 2 years passing by the Mormon church by Cedar Knoll not realizing it was a church. Why isn't there a sign on the lawn identifying it as such? Most churches post times of worship/events etc. Is there a parkway regulation that prohibits it?   more ›
