The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed Edward Long Jr., a former deputy county executive and chief financial officer, to succeed County Executive Anthony Griffin effective April 25. Board Chairman Sharon Bulova made the announcement after the board’s closed session on Tuesday afternoon. The decision was made sooner than expected, as officials thought the county would need to appoint an acting executive while they completed their search. Long, 59, has more than 34 years of experience with the county, beginning his career in 1977 as a budget analyst. He became the director of the Department of Management and Budget in 1989. Panel, citizens agree a higher salary is needed to attract the right candidate for an impossible job
"We’re not going to get somebody in here on Tony’s salary," said a constituent at Supervisor John Cook's Town Hall on Monday night. Fairfax County Executive Tony Griffin is scheduled to retire in April, and the Board of Supervisors has begun the process to replace him. According to Cook, Griffin currently earns about $240,000 a year. School superintendent Jack Dale earns about $320,000 a year, and many in the room said that discrepancy would need to be adjusted if the county wanted to attract top candidates for county executive. I think the Board of Supervisors made a good choice, although I don’t know who else was being considered for THE most important job in the County. Ed Long said he plans to stay for at least four years, but it’s not too early to start planning for his successor.
