Chairman Sharon Bulova and Supervisor Cathy Hudgins joined McKay on this matter to ask for a response to the Commission of Women's recommendations.
During Tuesday's Board of Supervisor's meeting, the board passed Supervisors Jeff McKay and Cathy Hudgins and Chairman Sharon Bulova's joint matter to review and respond to the Commission of Women's (CFW) recent recommendations on domestic violence and housing in Fairfax County. According to the written matter, CFW has been developing the recommendations on how to increase safe, affordable housing options for domestic violence victims in the county since 2010. In doing so, CFW has heard from a number of organizations including non-profits, faith-based and government groups that help domestic violence with their housing needs. In their research, CFW found there is a definite link between domestic violence and homelessness. CFW also found …

Moran's girlfriend releases statement calling police report 'inaccurate,' saying that she fell.
Patrick Moran, the son of longtime Democratic congressman Jim Moran, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to simple assault stemming from a domestic violence incident earlier this month in Washington. Moran, 23, who lives on South Randolph Street in Arlington, also remains under investigation by state and local authorities thanks to a video that surfaced before the November election in which he appears to give advice on how to skirt voter identification laws. Domestic violence is a huge issue in Fairfax County — one call can make a difference.
It was about 1:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day 1961. I pushed my younger brother and sister into my bedroom closet so they couldn’t see my father pointing the large kitchen knife at my mother. They had just returned from the local VFW hall and they were both drunk. As soon as they walked into the house, they started screaming at each other and soon there was pushing and shoving. We had witnessed these physical altercations before, but this time the tension was more palpable than usual. As I watched from the crack in my door, I knew my father had more violent thoughts on his mind. He held up the knife and lunged but, fortunately, he missed his target and his head hit the radiator, knocking him out. I ran, grabbed the knife and threw it in …

The support that these Board of Supervisors has given to victims of domestic violence (DV) is heartening. It is time that our county starts to fully take onboard the plight of victims and their families. Their needs are unique, and there is no cookie-cutter approach that will work to restore financial and emotional stability. I have spent the last 10 years working with victims and have seen far …   more ›
