The biggest news of Election Day 2011: Democrats and incumbents were re-elected including a hard-won race by Democratic state Sen. Linda "Toddy" Puller, who fought off a challenge from former Del. Jeff Frederick in the closest race among Route 1 area political representatives Tuesday. Incumbents were returned to office in Tuesday's elections, with former Del. Two seats among those Republicans hope to nab in Tuesday's election
As Election Day nears, Virginia Republicans are keeping a close eye on several tight races across the state, hoping to wrest control of the state Senate away from the Democrats. George Mason University Professor Mark Rozell told Reuters that if Republicans take the state Senate, it could spell trouble next year for President Obama, who won the state in 2008. Northern Virginia has seen visits in recent weeks from Michelle Obama, second lady Jill Biden, former President Bill Clinton and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Five candidates are vying for three seats on the NVSWCD board.
The Nov. 8 general election ballot includes candidates for the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is composed of five members, three of whom are elected every four years. The two remaining directors are appointed by the board, one being a Virginia Cooperative Extension agent serving Fairfax County. Adria Bordas was appointed to that position in 2002. The NVSWCD was founded in 1945 by citizens concerned about protecting and conserving the county’s natural resources. The district has the same boundaries as Fairfax County, but does not include the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax or Falls Church. The Fairfax County Office of Elections needs more than 2,000 poll workers for the election that takes place on Tuesday, according to Cameron Quinn, who heads up the operation. Right now, the county has 1,835 workers scheduled for Tuesday, but needs 2,188 more by then. The county pays between $100 to $200 for the day, which can be as long as 12 hours.
