Mount Vernon, Chantilly Field Hockey Teams Roll Into Regional Tournament

Mount Vernon hosted Chantilly in Tuesday's Northern Region opener.

UPDATE (Oct. 24, 9 a.m.): The Majors defeated Chantilly in last night's game. They will face West Springfield Friday night at MVHS. Mount Vernon field hockey (15-3-1) coach Jessica Hebel watched Chantilly play (8-9-1) in the Under the Lights tournament in late August. Senior players at Mount Vernon High School discuss memories, goals for final season.

As the second day of school at Mount Vernon High School ended, the members of the field hockey team gathered at the baseball field for practice. For nine of these players, this season will be their last. “I’m just sad,” said senior Megan Cole, who plays defense for the varsity team. “I’m looking forward to having a really good year with my best friends.” Many of the seniors have been playing the game for their entire high school careers. When they started ninth grade, many of them made plans to try out for field hockey together. Lizzy Sagar, who plays left high midfield, said trying out for field hockey was initially just a way to be with friends, but it became more than that. “I started off because all of my friends were doing it.
