Two birds and a pet chinchilla perished in the fire Thursday afternoon.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department estimate the damges to a home in the 4100 block of Fielding Street at about $225,000, according to a recent news release. The fire is currently under investigation. The Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire at approximately 3:10 p.m. Thursday in the Mount Vernon area. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the front and rear of the three-story, split-level home. Firefighters were also challenged with a downed live power line near the driveway of the home. (UPDATE 4:35 p.m.): Firefighters say the fire that engulfed a home on Fielding Street in Mount Vernon Thursday afternoon may have started outside. "I don't want to speculate, but it was around the time school buses were dropping kids off and parents weren't around," said Andrew Duke, deputy chief, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. "A bystander on a cell phone called and said that a fire started outside the building and then spread to the inside," Duke told Patch. Fire investigators are on the scene.
