Onetime Nanuet resident thanks Catherine Nowicki, her high school English teacher, for inspiring her
Former Nanuet resident Emily Allen attributes much of her success to her former high school English teacher Catherine Nowicki. Allen, whose maiden name was Li, was promoted to the rank of Navy commander on December 28, 2012 at a ceremony at the McNamara Headquarters Complex at Fort Belvoir. Allen, graduated from Nanuet Senior High School in 1993 and then attended the SUNY Maritime College, joined Naval ROTC and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1997. Allen said Nowicki, who is currently Clarkstown’s chairwoman of Economic Development, was a great inspiration to her and one of the reasons she chose a career as a naval officer. Jim Moran (D-8th District) have re-introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday to study the extension of Metrorail into the Richmond Highway corridor. Christine Vance of Fort Belvoir has been nominated for Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year. Vance is one of 18 nominees for the Military Spouse of the Year contest sponsored by Military Spouse magazine. Each year, the contest honors the most deserving military spouses nationwide. Vance is the founder of Heidi's Pantry, a food and clothing sharing program helping families in need at Fort Belvoir. The Fort Belvoir Officers' Club hosts its annual bridal fair.
If you recently got engaged to your significant other or are in the process of planning a wedding, be sure to attend the Belvoir Bridal Fair at the Fort Belvoir Officers' Club on Saturday. The bridal fair will feature more than 50 vendors, including DJ's, bands, travel agents, photographers, hair and make-up stylists, gowns, flowers, and cakes. Door prizes and giveaways will also take place. Admission is $10, and no pre-paid reservations are required to attend the Bridal Fair. Kaine talks sequestration at base that supports more than 143,251 military and civilian personnel.
U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, visited Fort Belvoir Monday to visit the hospital, participate in a roundtable with wounded warriors and tour the base. “The Fort Belvoir Community Hospital is a great example of the care our returning warriors deserve,” Kaine said in a news release. “I was honored to meet with wounded warriors and members of their families today to discuss their concerns and to ask for their advice as I take on this new role. It's the largest facility the USO has ever built.
Hundreds witnessed the ribbon-cutting Tuesday afternoon at the USO Warrior and Family Center on Fort Belvoir. The $25 million 20,000 square-foot facility is the largest USO facility ever built, and is designed as a place to lift the spirits of injured and ill troops, as well as local active duty personnel in all of the U.S. Armed Forces. "The USO has not only identified a need, but they have taken action," said Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Col. Gregory Gadson, who lost both of his legs in Iraq in 2007. "This opening represents a partnership between all of our services in the USO…to help in the healing process." Local, state and congressional leaders met Thursday in Arlington to discuss six potential sites for a new FBI headquarters and to present a unified front in their commitment to landing the new federal complex somewhere in Northern Virginia. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who called the meeting, said leaders from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties had a "singular focus" in bringing the FBI headquarters to the Old Dominion. "We're all committed to finding a home for the FBI in the commonwealth of Virginia," Moran said during a news conference following the meeting. Take a Veteran to School Day connected students with military veterans.
Raucous cheers of "U.S.A!" could be heard at Fort Belvoir Elementary School as hundreds of students greeted visiting veterans Friday morning. Take a Veteran to School Day connects veterans with students in a special celebration of veterans. The program is a joint public outreach effort with History Channel, Cox Communications, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Rear Admiral Richard A. Buchanan of the U.S. Navy (Ret.) joined veterans in telling their stories to students. Ninety-eight percent of students attending Fort Belvoir Elementary School have parents who are serving in the military. Get out your schooner and knee-high socks because Fort Belvoir's 17th Annual Oktoberfest is back this week! Belvoir's Freemont Field will host the four-day festival, which includes German music, food, beer, a carnival, 10K Volksmarch and games. Entry to the event is open to the public, and it will be held rain or shine. Beer (and non-alcoholic beverages) costs $5, a ceramic mug costs $8 (plus $5 if you want beer in it) and wine costs $4 per glass.
