As drivers gas up for the vacation weekend, where will prices go?
Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the Northern Virginia area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices for the Northern Virginia region this week are at $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.68 a gallon a year ago, according to gas prices listed by AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.57 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. Gas prices increase over night after Isaac reaches the Gulf.
Since then-Hurricane Isaac hit land Tuesday afternoon, there has been an average 4-cent increase in gas prices across the nation, a bump felt at the pump in Northern Virginia as well, according to AAA. Since Wednesday evening, Isaac was bumped back to a tropical storm but is still expected to cause heavy rains and winds as it moves inland this week. “I think the change in gas prices is short-lived,” said John Townsend, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Once the weather changes, hopefully we’ll see prices similar to what they were before the storm.” In the Washingto metropolitan area, the average gas price for regular gasoline jumped from $3.93 to $3.99 since Tuesday night, according to AAA. Hurricane Isaac, which may hit the Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday and has already shut down several refineries, could send gas prices up right before Labor Day weekend. But for now, it looks like Americans are still making plans to travel. The average fuel price in Fairfax County on Sunday was $3.80 — more than 20 cents higher than just a month ago and slightly higher than Friday's national average of $3.75. AAA defines the Labor Day holiday weekend as starting on Thursday and ending Monday, Sept. 3.
