Progreso to Host Valentine's Dinner Dance Fundraiser

The annual dinner and dance will take place at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

Progreso Literacy and Citizenship Center will host its annual Valentine's Dinner and Dance on Saturday night at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Guests can take their Valentine to a dinner and dance for a good cause. Proceeds will benefit the Progreso Literacy and Citizenship Center. The nonprofit's mission is to "empower immigrants to improve the quality of their lives and of their communities through education, immigration services, and leadership development." Tickets are $30 per person, $15 for children under 10. Tickets can be purchased at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Progreso's headquarters, or at the door. For more information, call 703-780-4055.

Creedon Hall Open for Christmas Day Mass

The newly renovated hall at Good Shepherd Catholic Church will host its first major event on Christmas Eve.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church is ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses. After months of extensive renovations throughout the facility, Creedon Hall will open and welcome parishioners and visitors. This year's Christmas Eve Mass is the first major event since Creedon Hall closed for renovations in September. The renovations included an upgraded sound and lighting system, a kitchen extension, and partitions that divide the space into three smaller spaces. The space can now be used for a variety of programs. "Creedon Hall will suit all parish needs and ministries," Pastoral Associate Claudia Fiebig told Patch. A Mount Vernon church hosts its 37th annual International Festival.

Parishioners and guests celebrated diversity at the 37th Annual International Festival at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Labor Day. Hundreds of people attended the event, which is held annually on Labor Day weekend. This year's festival featured performances from the Arax Armenian Dancers, Mariachi Estrella, Boyle School of Irish Dance, and Kumbia Power. The International Festival raises money for the Shepherd's Gate grant program, which awards grants to local and national non-profits. Last year's festival raised $37,000 towards the program. International Festival begins with 5K run

The Good Shepherd Catholic Church’s festivities began Saturday to raise money for a cause.

With dark clouds hanging over, the Good Shepherd Catholic Church’s International Festival began at a friendly pace at the inaugural Family Fun Run/Walk. Participants lined up to walk and run to benefit the Shepherd’s Gate Grant Program. “Our goal is to raise as much money as possible,” said William DeMaso, who organized the 5K run and 1K walk for younger participants. DeMaso’s goal was to have 75 participants in the event. By the end of the day, there were a total of 103 participants — 80 in the 5K and 23 in the 1K. DeMaso also had 18 volunteers stationed throughout the route to assist runners and pass out water. “The focus for the run is fellowship and fun,” said DeMaso. “It’s a way of bringing the community and the church together.” …

Last Chance: Register for the International Festival 5K Run

Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Shepherd's Gate grant program.

There’s still time to sign up for the inaugural International Festival 5K run at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Saturday. Runners can sign up in person at the church on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 to 8:15 a.m. The race kicks off Saturday at 8:30 a.m at the church, and a 1K fun walk will be held at 8 a.m. The course will wind through the neighborhoods near Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Shepherd’s Gate grant program benefitting local and national charities. The International Festival 5K race is the kick-off event for International Festival weekend. Good Shepherd Church International Festival Faces Changes

Renovations have cancelled the White Elephant fundraiser.

The Good Shepherd Catholic Church International Festival is facing a few  changes in its 37th year. Due to the ongoing church renovations, the festival’s biggest fundraiser, the White Elephant, has been cancelled this year. The International Festival committee has had to brainstorm ways to recoup revenue lost from the fundraiser, International Festival coordinator Lou Volchansky said. Volchansky told Patch that the White Elephant will return next year. In the meantime, the committee has decided to put on a 5K run and 1K family walk on Sept. 1, two days before the festival. “No matter what shape you’re in, you can run as well as help,” Volchansky said. Last year’s Artisan Row proved so popular, it expanded from four artisans to 16 this year…

Volunteers are needed to monitor kids' rides, the plant booth, and Rose's Bakery.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church is recruiting volunteers to assist at this year's International Festival on Labor Day.  Last year, more than 350 volunteers assisted with different needs at the International Festival. Join the team of volunteers and help the festival run smoothly. Volunteer needs include: Sign up sheets are also available before and after Mass.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church Renovations Progress

Church sanctuary expected to open in late July.

Construction at Good Shepherd Catholic Church has been progressing over the last couple of months. The renovation project is now in its eighth week, and construction crews have completed the vast majority of demolition that was required and are working on building, framing, and installing walls, replacing the roof, and have completed most of the insulation work, parish administrator Claudia Fiebig told Patch. Crews are in the process of installing a sprinkler system throughout the building “to improve the safety of the facility,” Fiebig said. The sanctuary is in the process of undergoing renovations including a new audio/visual system, safety upgrades, and a choir instrument storage system. From Huntington-Belle Haven Patch The Virginia Supreme Court has given the green light for Huntington residents to sue VDOT after a 2006 flood. The residents sued in 2008, for $9 million, saying the flooding was due to Capital Beltway construction.
