Flu: Inova Restricts Hospital Visitation to Avoid Outbreak

Hospital curtails visitation hours, restricts visitors to those 18 and older.

The flu epidemic sweeping the country is definitely being felt in Northern Virginia, with hospital emergency rooms reporting a spike in patients coming in with flu-like symptoms. In the wake of the increase in flu cases in Northern Virginia, Inova hospitals are putting restrictions on visitors, the hospital system announced Friday in a news release. "As part of our vision to optimize the health and well-being of each individual we serve, Inova hospitals will be instituting specific visitation measures in response to continued regional Influenza infection," said spokesman Tony Raker, in the release.   "These measures, designed to protect patients, visitors and staff from exposure to influenza, are in effect system wide at all Inova hospital…

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital to Get New Emergency Department

The new 21,000 square foot addition will have 30 treatment bays and five fast-track bays.

The Inova Governance Board recently approved a new addition to the emergency department at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. The 21,000 square-foot addition will have 30 treatment bays, five fast-track bays, CT and digital X-Rays, and a modern HVAC system, according to a news release sent out Tueday by the hospital. The addition will also create a new emergency department entrance that will separate emergency patient flow from other patient and visitor traffic. “This is an exciting announcement for the Mount Vernon community, because it represents the creation of an emergency department that fully meets the needs of this growing  community – not only today, but also into the future,” Inova CEO Knox Singleton said in a release. “Our hospital …

USDA Official to Visit Arcadia Mobile Market Today

A local farmers' market that helps the needy is getting some federal attention. Ed Avalos, USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, will visit the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture’s Mobile Market stop at the South County Center Thursday afternoon. Community Leaders Break Ground on Expansion to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital

A $43 million expansion to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital will add a patient tower and two operating rooms.

Inova leaders broke ground last Friday on a $43 million planned expansion to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital already houses 237 patient beds and this expansion will create another patient tower and two operating rooms. Construction is set to begin this summer. The new tower will add rooms to the Inova Rehabilitation Center. Twenty private rooms will be built and the 17 already-existing rooms will be redesigned. The Inova Joint Replacement Center will also gain 20 new private rooms and their previous 28 rooms will also be converted into private rooms. To Attract a New County Executive, Money Is No Object

Panel, citizens agree a higher salary is needed to attract the right candidate for an impossible job

"We’re not going to get somebody in here on Tony’s salary," said a constituent at Supervisor John Cook's Town Hall on Monday night.  Fairfax County Executive Tony Griffin is scheduled to retire in April, and the Board of Supervisors has begun the process to replace him. According to Cook, Griffin currently earns about $240,000 a year. School superintendent Jack Dale earns about $320,000 a year, and many in the room said that discrepancy would need to be adjusted if the county wanted to attract top candidates for county executive. Supervisor Cook agreed. "The Board of Supervisors hasn't yet set any parameters, but when you're as big as Fairfax County, you find who you want and you get them," he said.
