Coming soon to a theater near you: Fairfax area advocates and police on the big screen warning moviegoers not to drink and drive. The ads are part of a campaign launched Wednesday by the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County (UPC) and local police to curb drunk driving among young adults in advance of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The ad campaign is part of the UPC's efforts to encourage drivers ages 18 to 24 to not drink and drive. The ads were unveiled Wednesday and shown to students and parents at a UPC-sponsored "Perils of the College Drinking Culture" forum at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College. As drivers gas up for the vacation weekend, where will prices go?
Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the Northern Virginia area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices for the Northern Virginia region this week are at $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.68 a gallon a year ago, according to gas prices listed by AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.57 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. On Monday, 1,700-mile relay to Dallas passed through Belle Haven, Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon.
Joe Wolfel, a former Navy SEAL from Arlington, walked ten miles from Alexandria to Mount Vernon to honor the memory of the fallen. “I got out and one of my buddies died,” recalled Wolfel. “I wanted to bring awareness to the true meaning of Memorial Day. It’s not just a day off from work.” Wolfel joined participants in the Carry the Load relay as it passed through the Mount Vernon area on Monday. The 1700-mile relay started in West Point, N.Y. and is raising awareness about the true meaning of Memorial Day, one town at a time.
