RECenters will allow showers at no cost.
Every Fairfax County RECenter except for George Washington will be open until 6 p.m. Wednesday so local residents can enjoy air conditioning, use the shower and recharge cellphones, medical and other electronic devices. The normal fee for showers has been waived. However, residents must bring their own towels and toiletries. RECenters will open at their regularly scheduled time. The Mount Vernon RECenter is located at 2017 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria. The facility opens at 6 a.m. For continuous updates, visit the Fairfax County Emergency Blog.

Sherwood Regional Library was a popular choice for local residents seeking relief from the heat Sunday.
Over the weekend, Bob and Gail Trimble found themselves temporarily homeless in the face of temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees. The Trimbles, who live in Mason Hill, survived Friday’s violent storm, which knocked a large oak tree into their garage and part of their home. Without a safe place to stay, they have been sleeping at a hotel at Fort Belvoir, although it doesn’t have working air-conditioning. “It’s always the worst,” Bob Trimble said of his neighborhood. “We lose power first and we are always last to get it back.” On Sunday, the couple kept cool by attending church services, eating out for lunch and stopping by Sherwood Regional Library, where they joined countless others seeking relief from the heat and widespread power …

The all ages show featured nearly 100 ice skaters and dozens of acts.
Ice skaters of all ages gathered at the Mount Vernon RECenter on Saturday for the annual Holiday Ice Show. Performances included everything from children’s groups to solos by local competitive skaters. Even RECenter coaches showed off their dance moves for the packed audience. “This is a big community event we all come together to work on,” coach Emme Porter said. “It’s a little bit of everything, not just Christmas music. Everybody gets a chance to perform. We’re not elite, so anybody interested was able to take part—from beginners to the really competitive types.” The ice show featured both new acts choreographed for the holiday season just one month ago as well as performers showing off the routines skaters have been practicing all year…

I am not complaining as I think Dominion Virginia Power has done an excellent job since my power was only out for 16 hours. Phone service was a little confusing to me as my landline phone with Verizon was out until this morning but is working today as well as our cell phones using Sprint and AT&T towers. I do have to give credit to AT&T as that cell phone always had contact throughout the outage…   more ›
