MVCCA Announces 2013 Award Winners

All winners will be recognized at the annual gala on April 27.

The Mount Vernon Council of Citizens' Associations (MVCCA) has announced the recipients of its 2013 Citizen of the Year, Organization of the Year, and Student of the Year awards. Citizen of the Year: Becky & Jeff Todd have been stars in the Mount Vernon community for over 30 years. Prior to Jeff Todd’s death in 2011, together they championed those in need and local athletic teams and helped Richmond Highway to revitalize and grow. Since the death of her husband, Becky has continued to work tirelessly, carrying on the work they started. Organization of the Year: Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce (MVLCC) and the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC). Volunteers Needed for Richmond Highway 'Spring Clean'

This clean-up is sponsored by the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce and Fort Belvoir Installation Command.

Volunteers are needed to help beautify Richmond Highway and surrounding roads through Fort Belvoir at the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Spring Clean event. Join with businesses in the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Belvoir Installation Command to remove winter debris.  Volunteers will meet at the Candlewood Suites, 8847 Richmond Highway, Alexandria to receive garbage bags, safety vests, and work assignments.   Candlewood Suites will host a $5 barbecue with hotdogs and hamburgers after the cleanup. Sequestration and Fear of the Unknown in Fairfax County

The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce held a roundtable Thursday about what the across-the-board cuts will mean to the Northern Virginia economy.

What will sequestration's $1.2 trillion in across-the-board cuts do to the Northern Virginia economy? Specifics are hard to come by, but it doesn't look good.  Fairfax County executive Ed Long is hoping that the White House will soon put forward a proposal outlining the 10-year implementation of the cuts.  "I think the rest of the world is interested in how we are dealing with this issue," said Long. "We know we are going to take a hit, but tell us what is going to be hit and we'll move forward." Congress triggerred the sequester after failing to meet the March 1 deadline to compromise on $1.2 trillion in debt reduction, and this year the U.S. military will be forced to cut $46 billion and domestic defense spending will be cut by $85 …

Five new leadership officials were welcomed at the Installation Extravaganza.

New leadership was sworn into office at the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce's annual Installation Extravaganza Wednesday at the Mount Vernon Country Club. “I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead,” Barbara Doyle, CEO of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and the new Chamber Chairman said in a release, “My vision is to increase and retain membership and ensure that our members receive true value for their investment into the Chamber.” The new leadership team is: Outgoing Chairman Michael Gailliot was also recognized as an exemplary leader  and an advocate for turf fields at Mount Vernon high school and athletic opportunities. Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber Scholarship Applications Available

The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce awards scholarships to college-bound seniors.

Applications for the 2013 Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Education Partnership Scholarships are now available.   Scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to graduating high school seniors in Mount Vernon and Lee Districts pursuing post-secondary education in a business-related field. Those applying for the scholarships must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0, and have work or community volunteer experience. Applicants must submit an essay with the application and a copy of their high school transcript. The application deadline is April 26. Supervisor Jeff McKay to Update Constituents on Local Development at Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber Event

McKay is featured speaker for the Chamber's Installation Extravaganza.

Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay will be the guest speaker Feb. 27 at the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Installation Extravaganza. According to an email sent by the chamber, Supervisor McKay will update guests on Fairfax County issues and development in Lee District. Attendees will welcome the new Chamber officers and salute Michael Gailliot for his service as Chamber chairman. Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber President Barbara Doyle will give the "State of the Chamber." Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber to Recognize Volunteers at 59th Annual Meeting

Mount Vernon CEO Curtis Viebranz is this year's featured speaker.

The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce will host its 59th Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Tuesday at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Historic Mount Vernon President and CEO Curtis Viebranz will be the guest speaker at this year's meeting. Viebranz will provide an update on what is happening at Mount Vernon in 2013. Additionally, chamber committees and volunteers will be recognized and the results of the Board of Directors election will be announced at the meeting.  The 59th Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition will take place Tuesday night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Take a Veteran to School Day connected students with military veterans.

Raucous cheers of "U.S.A!" could be heard at Fort Belvoir Elementary School as hundreds of students greeted visiting veterans Friday morning. Take a Veteran to School Day connects veterans with students in a special celebration of veterans. The program is a joint public outreach effort with History Channel, Cox Communications, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Rear Admiral Richard A. Buchanan of the U.S. Navy (Ret.) joined veterans in telling their stories to students. Ninety-eight percent of students attending Fort Belvoir Elementary School have parents who are serving in the military.  Bonnie Rice of Alexandria is a World War II veteran who participated in Take a Veteran to School Day.
