Majors Gymnastics Faces a New Season

This year's team is small in number, but has big goals.

The Majors gymnastics team is getting ready to kick off another season. Assistant Coach Jen Lee has coached the team for four years and hopes the team will have a strong start in their first meet on Thursday. "Our goal is to break 100 points as a team and to get an idea of where they are at in their routines, what routine requirements they need to work on to get full credit," Lee said. For five seniors, this season marks their last high school season. Seniors Franqui Pierce, Olivia Kimble, Carson Meadows, Jordan Klager, and Illissa Mejia are graduating in 2013. Olivia Kimble has been a member of the gymnastics team since her freshman year. She lives by the motto: “go hard or go home.” “I’d like to accomplish everything that I haven’t been …

Majors Off to Good Start Under Wiley

Mount Vernon opens season with win over West Potomac.

Basketball is in John Wiley’s blood — literally.   His father, also named John, coached at Prince George's Community College for nearly four decades. His sister, Jeri Porter, is currently the head women’s basketball coach at George Mason University. Wiley’s foray into coaching came courtesy of his father at Prince George's Community College, where he spent four years on staff. But his introduction to the sport came much earlier.   “We’re a basketball family,” said the second-year head coach with a laugh. Mount Vernon tapped Wiley to replace former head coach Alfonso Smith in 2011, pulling the coach from Bowie High School. After winning eight games in his first season at the helm, Wiley’s squad is poised to make some noise in the National …

Photos: MVHS Hosts Community Pep Rally

Mount Vernon and West Potomac High students came out to show their support for their schools.

Students, parents, and athletes gathered Wednesday night in the Michael Skinner Field House at Mount Vernon High School for a community pep rally. MVHS and West Potomac High School athletes, students, and faculty members participated in games including touch football, chair races and a dance-off with both school mascots. The community pep rally began as a way to bring together the Mount Vernon and West Potomac communities, MVHS Principal Nardos King said. "We're rival schools, but we don't have to not like each other," King said. "We should be supporting each other's communities." King hopes the pep rally becomes an ongoing tradition.
