What Could Have Happened?

Mount Vernon High School chorus members are shocked by District results.

By Gabrielle Wineberger, News Editor, The Em Vee Hi For the last three years senior Hannah Yun has auditioned for the part of Soprano 1 for districts. Each year, Yun has been accepted and participated in the choir and even continued on to All-State last year. This year she did not even make the first cut. “I was a little shocked when I found out that I did not make it,” Yun said,  “This year I really wanted to make it because it is my senior year and I really wanted to do All-State again this year.” There were many students selected from Mount Vernon for districts, but scores were lower. FCPS Logs On To Digital Age

Implementation of new online resources sparks controversy.

By Riley Bannon, Editor in Chief, The Em Vee Hi Fairfax County has incorporated new technology into schools this year, including Google Apps for Education, and online textbooks. The change has been brought concerns from teachers, students, and parents alike and all sides are waiting to see if the online resources will pay off. The county began phasing in online textbooks in 2010, with social studies textbooks for 18 schools, which were then implemented for all students from grade 7 to grade 12.  This school year, all math courses were given online textbooks for all grades K through 12. New to the school system this year as well is the Google Apps program. The program is, according to the FCPS website, free to the county, unlike pricey …

A member of National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Forensics and Debate, Young Democrats, News Crew, Chess Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Gay Straight Alliance, It’s Academic, the wrestling and tennis teams, and a Student Advisory Council delegate, he balances all of his clubs and activities while leaving what he hopes to be a lasting legacy on the school. With such a busy schedule, Victoria has worked hard to figure out how to balance it all. The self-proclaimed “introvert” uses a to-do list system called the Wonder List, and focuses on time management. Equally important to his success is taking time to relax by meditating …

Mount Vernon Players rock the stage in "The Velveteen Rabbit"

By Gabrielle Wineberger, The Em Vee Hi News Editor The drama department kicked off the year with their fall show “The Velveteen Rabbit," a timeless tale written by Phil Grecian that the players have brought to life in their performance of the story.  “The Velveteen Rabbit” is about a boy named Alex living in the time when the scarlet fever was a big epidemic. To avoid being lonely he uses his imagination to bring his velveteen rabbit to life. When Alex gets the disease, the rabbit tries to help save him and realizes the only way to be a real rabbit is to have a heart and love the boy back.
