Fairfax County government closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day. County schools are open.
Some Fairfax County offices and services will be closed on Monday in observance of Veterans Day. Here's the lowdown: Fairfax County Government is closed. Fairfax County Public Schools are open. Fairfax County courts will be closed. Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities, including Fastran services, will be closed. Fairfax County Public Libraries are closed Sunday and Monday. Libraries will re-open Tuesday. RECenters will be open on a regular schedule on Monday. Community centers will be closed. Editor's Note: Article submitted by reader Diane Nees. Early this past summer, Darlene Spurlock, the Director of Wesley Preschool and Kindergarten, applied to be a name reader at the 30th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. She was so excited when she got her acceptance letter along with the 30 names she would be reading. The amazing thing about this story is that Darlene personally knew one person whose name appears on the Wall - and that person's name appeared in the list of names she was to read! The organizers of this special Veteran's Day event had no knowledge of this friendship. Local residents will commemorate Veterans Day.
On Sunday, Veterans Day, Americans will honor military veterans with ceremonies and tributes. Nov. 11 (the legal public holiday for Veterans Day), falls on a Sunday. For most federal employees, Monday, Nov. 12, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. Veterans Day has its roots in Armistice Day, which was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Seven years later, President Calvin Coolidge issued another proclamation to commemorate Armistice Day with ceremonies. Armistice Day was officially changed in 1956 to Veterans Day. Take a Veteran to School Day connected students with military veterans.
Raucous cheers of "U.S.A!" could be heard at Fort Belvoir Elementary School as hundreds of students greeted visiting veterans Friday morning. Take a Veteran to School Day connects veterans with students in a special celebration of veterans. The program is a joint public outreach effort with History Channel, Cox Communications, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Rear Admiral Richard A. Buchanan of the U.S. Navy (Ret.) joined veterans in telling their stories to students. Ninety-eight percent of students attending Fort Belvoir Elementary School have parents who are serving in the military.
