Photos: Mount Vernon Woods Students Give Vets A Hero’s Welcome

Take a Veteran to School Day gives students valuable insight on military service.

Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School students cheered and clapped for Gen. Allison A. Hickey, Under Secretary of Benefits of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and local veterans as they entered the school on Wednesday morning. “When I showed up this morning I never felt so loved,” said General Hickey. “I almost felt like a rock star.” The History Channel and Cox Communications, in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs, hosted the special event as part of its fifth annual Take a Veteran to School Day. Take a Veteran to School Day is a public outreach program launched by the History Channel in 2007 in order to connect veterans with students in communities nationwide. Kudos to Mt. Vernon Woods, Ms. Ruth Woods, and the History Channel. I have come full circle now--Army brat, then Army wife, and now Army mom--and am so delighted to see our veterans honored like this. It looks like it was a wonderful day for everyone involved!   more ›
