New initiative depends on community involvement.
A new initiative uniting neighborhoods, schools, and community resources to help children succeed has started gaining traction. Opportunity Neighborhoods is a partnership between Fairfax County, Fairfax County Public Schools, and the community. Its mission is to nurture children from cradle to college to career, said Karla Bruce, Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services Division Director for Regions 1 and 4. The initiative began a few years ago when Fairfax County and FCPS applied for the Promise Neighborhoods grant. Although they were not awarded the grant, it helped start a dialogue about helping youth reach their full potential. “The good news is it placed us in a conversation with one another about success and …

Delegate Scott Surovell will host his third cleanup of the local creek on Oct. 20.
This Saturday, Delegate Scott Surovell will have a Little Hunt Creek Cleanup from noon to 4 p.m. in coordination with Mount Vernon Girl Scout Troop 922. This cleanup will be the third organized by Surovell. The previous two cleanups have resulted in the removal of two tons of trash and 96 shopping carts, according to press release recently provided by Surovell’s office. Weeks after the last cleanup in May, Surovell reviewed the cleanup site to find more bottles, plastic bags and shopping carts. In 2005, Little Hunt Creek was named the “trashiest Stream in Fairfax County” for what was “one of the toughest stream cleanups in county history.” Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality has also called Little Hunting Creek as impaired due …

Dozens of children will receive free physicals so they can start school on time.
On Saturday, dozens of uninsured children will get free physicals at the tenth annual Back to School Physicals Clinic at the South County Center. Co-coordinator Katy Fike started the free clinic with Bonnie Lilley in 2002. Lilley worked at a similar program in Springfield, and in 2002, they decided the Route 1 corridor should also make these clinics available to uninsured children. Ten years later, the clinics are still going strong, with between 125 and 150 children registered each year. The Back to School Physicals Clinics would not be able to operate without the support of volunteers and community sponsors. “We engage as many volunteers as we can,” Fike said. “It’s a community effort.” The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce, the Mount…

Goldie Locks is sweet, playful, energetic and eager to please.
Since the loss of power in our region prevented so many from meeting Goldie last week, we are featuring this lovable pup again. We hope your power is back on, or will be very soon. _____ Hey there. My name is Goldie Locks, but my rescue friends all call me Goldie. I’m a Golden Retriever-Chow mix and weigh about 45 pounds, but still have some filling out to do. I’m only a year old and very much a puppy—sweet, playful, energetic and eager to please. I was rescued out of a shelter in Maryland, after being picked up as a stray. It's hard to believe that no one came looking for me, but here I am ready to find my new family and start my new life. Mutts Matter set me up with a seasoned foster mom, who started working with me right away on basic …

Volunteer-based organization works to pair buddies with disabilities and without.
Throughout the year, select Sundays at Washington Irving Middle School are seldom a quiet scene. Kids are hammering nails into Christmas crafts for their parents, jamming out on mini keyboards, singing along to karaoke, playing Connect Four shrieking with delight, or shooting hoops in the gym. It’s about three weeks before Christmas and this is the scene six times a year when Eddie’s Club takes up residence at the Springfield, VA, middle school. Eddie’s Club is a volunteer-based non-profit organization for kids ages 4 – 21 that have any form of disability. There are few clubs like it in the Northern Virginia area; where kids, teens and young adults with and without disabilities can get together for a few hours on a Sunday for some social …
