Route 1 Dispatches: Fire Displaces Mount Vernon Family

Take a look back at this week's top headlines from the Route 1 corridor.

Mount Vernon Patch A fire engulfed a home on Fielding Street Thursday afternoon, which caused two adults and two children to be displaced by the fire. George Washington’s Rye Whiskey went on sale on Wednesday. The un-aged and aged varieties were made at George Washington’s restored distillery. Fort Hunt Patch The West Potomac Academy and Alexandria Community Dance production of The Nutcracker opened Thursday night. The show will run through Dec. 1. Local dancer Natalie Edwards is touring with “Billy Elliot: The Musical," performing at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore in December. Huntington Belle Haven Patch Renovations on the Belle View Safeway are on track for the store to reopen in March 2013. Possible redevelopment at Cityside …

REMINDER: West Potomac Academy, Alexandria Community Dance Present 'The Nutcracker'

The dance groups will perform a modern version of 'The Nutcracker' starting Thursday evening.

West Potomac Academy and Alexandria Community Dance will join together to present their fourth annual performance of The Nutcracker, the traditional holiday story with a modern twist. Performances will be Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1 at West Potomac High School. West Potomac Academy’s dance students will participate in the entire production, both on stage and behind the scenes, and Advanced Dance students will have featured performances. The performance will include ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, and hip-hop dance and gymnastics. More than 100 students from the Alexandria area auditioned to be a part of the performance.
