What is wrong with supporting a business? Especially one that resides on land that once belonged to George Washington. As someone who rides and works at the stable you might think that I am a little to biased here, but I am also a life long Mount Vernon resident. I want to preserve as much of my community as possible. The stables and the land have a very rich history. There are few communities left in the Washington D.C. area that remain as they were 40-50 years ago. I am proud to be living in one of thosse communities - not only living here but contributing to and raising a family here. This is more than saving a business - it is saving a way of life, a piece of history, a beautiful green space and an oasis in an increasinly stressfull world. Reason enough for this mom and Mt. Vernon resident!

I have know Joan since I was a child. I rode and worked at Woodlawn throughout the years. Seven years ago I came back to Woodlawn with my then 8 year old daughter, both of us ready for her to start her riding education at Woodlawn. It was so good to "come home". After a short time Joan said to me, "why aren't you riding?" That is all it took! Very soon afterwards I was working at Woodlawn while my kids were in school, and back in the saddle. Now, at age 44, I am still at Woodlawn, as an instructor and rider. Joan encouraged me to become an instructor, I wasn't sure but she was. I have been an instructor for 3 years now and love it and have watched my students' confidence explode as they learn horsemanship and riding. As usual, Joan knew better than me. She has been a boss, a mentor and most importantly a dear friend for many years. She will be missed and remembered always by all her two legged and four legged friends.

Oh Dave, if you seriously think the by-pass is going to solve Route 1 traffic problems you live in quite a fantasy world. The by-pass will still go from 6 lanes into 4 lanes. Route 1 will STILL go down to 1 lane merging into 95. This less than 1 mile (this is an estimate) stretch of by-pass will do nothing but destroy a community loved business, historic land and be an eyesore. Clearly you haven't been paying attention. I am proud to live in this area and have stayed here for 45 years for a reason. One of those reasons is the the rich history here in the Mt. Vernon area. Speaking as a strong supporter of Save Woodlawn Stables I don't want to see the NTHP cowtow to the stables - I want them to listen to the community and fight to preserve the ENTIRE Woodlawn Historic District. Here is my last piece of advice - if you hate the traffic and lack of cell phone coverage and want to bulldoze anything of value maybe it is time to consider moving.

Personally, I don't want the FHWA or the National Trust for Historic Preservation making land and life altering decisions about my community without my input. That is exactly what has happened here. This by-pass proposal has been pushed through so quickly and without proper procedures being followed you have to ask why. The fact of the matter is this IS historic land, the community DOES care and it will have a hugely negative effect on the Mt. Vernon community. Don't think for a moment that the by-pass is going to solve the Route 1 traffic concerns. You don't have to be an engineer to realize that when 6 lanes merge back to 4 there will be a problem. Going back to a widen-in-place plan will not slow this process down 4 years. The work has been done and with some thoughtful realignment and alternatives to spare as much of the Woodlawn Historic district (which includes the stables and the land it occupies) as possible everyone can walk away happier. Hopefully the Trust and the FHWA will realize just how valuable this land and the community that supports and fights for it are!
